On vacation McDonald’s may be a convenient and inexpensive option for lunch or dinner, but if you’re celiac everything gets more complicated, since not in all countries McDonald’s offers gluten-free options. Let’s see in which European countries you can find the gluten-free hamburger.
In all Austrian McDonald’s you can find gluten-free (glutenfrei) hamburgers, with a choice of 7 types: Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Doppio Double Cheeseburger, Triple Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger TS, Royal TS, Big’n’Tasty

McDonald’s in the UK currently does not have the classic gluten-free hamburger, but they have recently introduced the “Veggie Dippers“: a blend of red pepper and sundried tomato pesto, all coated in crispy breadcrumbs. They are gluten-free and fried separately, so both these and the fries can be eaten by the coeliac. Important: always ask if they are fried separately from the other ingredients with gluten (this is usually the case, but it’s always better to ask for confirmation in each venue!).
In all Danish McDonald’s you can find gluten-free (
In all Finnish McDonald’s you can find the gluten-free (gluteeniton) bread with which they will prepare the hamburger of your choice, among those achievable gluten-free (with safe ingredients). Even French fries and most sauces are guaranteed gluten-free.

French fries are gluten-free at origin, but there may be a risk of cross-contamination in the kitchen, so the company doesn’t guarantee them, but you can ask at any point of sale how they handle them and whether there is a risk of contamination or not.
Even in Norwegian

McDonald’s in Spain offers the possibility to have all kinds of hamburgers (except those containing fried products) with gluten-free (sin gluten) bread.

McDonald’s in Sweden offers 4 gluten-free (glutenfritt) hamburgers: hamburger, cheeseburger, QP Cheese and McFeast.
In Swiss McDonald’s, as in the Italian ones, you can find only one gluten-free hamburger (in collaboration with Schar), a double cheeseburger. The hamburger is already made and frozen: when you order it’s thawed directly in its packaging. For French fries, even in Switzerland, the rule is to ask in every restaurant if they are at risk of being contaminated or if they have dedicated fryers “away from gluten”. In addition, in the McCafè, you can also find gluten-free banana muffins with chocolate chips (individually packaged).
Also in Hungarian McDonald’s you can have 3 hamburgers in the gluten-free (gluténmentes) version, accompanied by French fries: double cheeseburger, McRoyal
